V/H/S 2 (2013) - Adam Winguard, Eduardo Sanchez, Simon Barrett, Gregg Hale, Gareth Evans, Timo Tjahjanto, and Jason Eisner
V/H/S 2 is terrifying. It's a anthology horror movie, like it's predecessor that pays homage to anthology horrors of the past. You see shades of Creepshow, Darkside, and Black Sabbath. However, the directors do such a good job of staying creative and keeping the viewers interested. It isn't just another found footage horror movie. This one has teeth.
The four tales and over-arcing story-line are all presented really well. A couple of private investigators stumble onto a series of disturbing videos while looking for a missing teenager. The videos that they find are all stand alone stories that have different antagonists all around. You have ghosts haunting a douchebag, a really original and authentic approach to the zombie genre, dumb twenty-somethings visiting a crazy satanic cult in Indonesia, and really creepy, really cool aliens that come to abduct kids at a sleep over. All of these stories are really creative and different. The acting doesn't matter because it's all found footage.
The scares mostly come off as Paranormal Activity type fright. It makes you lean forward and get heavily invested before you notice something small and then it hits you with a quick jump scare. It's a barbaric way of making movies but it works. However, it doesn't just rely on easy jump scares. Blood, guts, and gore are rampant. It has something to scare everybody.
I loved it. V/H/S is a really cool idea that gets a lot of independent directors together and have them tell a tale. It makes me think that Grindhouse (2007) should have been done the same way. The first VHS had Adam Wingard, Ti West, Tyler Gillett, Glenn McQuaid, and Radio Silence. This time we have Adam Wingard, Eduardo Sanchez, Simon Barrett, Gregg Hale, Gareth Evans, Timo Tjahjanto, and Jason Eisner. It's scary, it's entertaining, it's fun. I don't know what else to say about it other than try and see it. I hear that the last V/H/S was released on actual VHS format. That would be cool if this was as well.
