Scream 3 (2000) - Wes Craven

This came out while I was a junior in High School. I was right there in line buying tickets with my friends for Remember the Titans or something. Then promptly making a b-line to Scream 3 with a huge smile on my face. I couldn't wait. Thanks to the first movie, The second wasn't that great and it left me wanting something different. This is definitely different.

Sidney is in hiding. Living out her days as a Crisis Help Hotline operator in some small Californian town. However, someone is killing people from Woodsboro again while they are filming the hit slasher Stab 3. If your affiliated with the movie, then you might either be a suspect or victim. All of the usual cast of characters is on hand in one capacity or another. The series continues its who-done-it vibe, why change what works right?

We get a lot of new characters. Since, Stab 3 is based on the characters from the first movie the actors are portraying them. For example Parker Posey is playing Jennifer Jolie, who is playing Gale Weathers. Emily Mortimer plays Angelina Tyler, who is playing Sidney Prescott. Etc. This gives the mystery another level. Oh, we also get confirmation that this film series now exists within the same universe as Jay and Silent Bob, and takes place during Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back

This movie is full of humor. Almost to a fault. This is definitely a slasher. It's just so tongue-in-cheek that at times it becomes hard to take seriously. That is a far different tone than it's original. You can see some really interesting things that Wes Craven threw in, like the real life feud between Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox. Both Courtney Cox and Parker Posey threw in a few clues alluding to this. The cameos are numerous and fast. You can blink and miss someone new.

The writing feels lighter. It almost feels like it was written by Kevin Smith. The fast-paced and quick-witted humor is something that is commonplace in his movies. Let's just say that this has a strong Miramax feel to it. Different feel. Lighter of course but if has a certain completeness. It's full of detail and appears to be pretty cocksure.

The late Wes Craven was a genius. While this movie isn't as great as the original, nothing ever is. This is a passable Hollywood slasher with great jokes and a fun feel. I recommend it to anyone that has seen the first two. This is definitely a franchise that you should be familiar with. The Scream franchise doesn't have to be filled with great movies. They know exactly what they have to do. Give us more Dewey/Weathers.

Director: Wes Craven
Starring: Courtney Cox, David Arquette, Parker Posey, and Neve Campbell
Style: Comedy Slasher Series
Country: USA
Studio: Miramax

Did ya know...

Wes Craven filmed three different endings and didn't tell the cast which one he was going to use.
David Arquette and Courteney Cox met on the set of Scream (1996), dated while shooting Scream 2 (1997), and married a month before principal photography of Scream 3 (2000) began. Cox added 'Arquette' to her name, as seen in the credits of Scream 3 (2000). Arquette and Cox cut short their honeymoon in order to film Scream 3 (2000).

Ju-On (2000) - Takashi Shimizu

Watching Japanese horror is similar to watching British comedy. If you enjoy dry whit then you probably enjoy the boys of Monty Python in drag. That's the joke, they're dressed like women. Get it? Well, that's British humor. But if you're like most Americans you probably prefer Adam Sandler farting his way across a football field and hooking up with chicks that are way out of his league. Americans usually prefer this more in your face, crass brand of humor. My point is funny in England is different from funny in the US. The same goes for J-Horror. What the Japanese consider scary is very different from what Americans consider scary and it shows in this horror film. Japanese horror is generally slow (a little too slow sometimes), suspenseful and creepy. Ju-On is a creepy effing film. The movie has almost no soundtrack. It is incredibly suspenseful and the pay-offs are pretty awesome, but I think that it was done better in the American version (cultural t...

Humanoids From the Deep (1980) - Barbara Peeters and Jimmy T. Murakami

This is your standard old drive-in Creature Feature that has tons of gore and boobs. It's great if your in for a cheap thrill. This film goes right up along side any Roger Corman produced picture from the eighties. It's rumored that Joe Dante was approached to direct this movie but he turned it down. Humanoids from the Deep, also known as Monster, is a strange but forgettable piece of exploitation that failed to make it's notch in history. Don't let that detour you though. This is a really fun little film that doesn't fail to be entertaining.  A small sea town in California is terrorized by some mutated creatures from the deep. They look like some sort of mutated fish, merman-thing. They seem to have one goal in mind and that is raping and impregnating the females of the town. Also the town is being taken for a ride by a shifty businessman and his new corporate cannery. Could this evil cannery corporation be responsible for the Extreme Creatures of the B...
