Killjoy (2000) - Craig Ross Jr.

I had seen this one haunting video store shelves for years. It looked like it had been hashed out from a farm-league studio in a basement somewhere. I never really cared to pick it up. However, it looked perfect for the 31 Movies of Halloween. Finally, I am tapping into the Killjoy market! Michael is a dejected loser that is in love with this girl Jada. However, Jada is off limits. She is currently in a relationship with gangbanger, Lorenzo. Michael apparently knows this and ignores the warnings from her thug boyfriend and his crew. This leads to Michael getting beat-up in front of Jada as a warning. But Michael doesn't let it go. Instead, he summons an evil clown from a doll to come and seek out Michael's murderous revenge. The clown is Killjoy. He's annoying and he drives a stupid ice cream truck that is actually a passage to another world. Killjoy's world. While seeking revenge, will Killjoy go too far with Jada?   This movie has the lamest sum...

The Man from Planet X (1951) - Edgar G. Ulmer

Aliens have always been terrifying to me. The unknown. The foreign visitor from another world that cannot convey it's intentions. These old drive-in sci-fi thrillers were great. They were just scary enough to create the fear. That groups them in with the horror genre. The Man from Planet X is one of these Sci-Fi Thrillers. It creates mystery and still gets the blood rushing. A rogue-planet has been drifting through outer space and it will pass close to earth. Scientists have dubbed the celestial body, Planet X. A news reporter has been invited to a remote Scottish island to report on the scientists findings on Planet X. While on the island a spaceship lands bringing a very strange fellow whose intentions are unknown. Some people take this mystery as a threat, as they seek to kill and profit from the alien. This obviously doesn't work out too well.  The eerie atmosphere during this movie is terrifying. If you could imagine the mindset of these people who are ...

Children of the Damned (1964) - Anton Leader

I came across this movie on Turner Classics. In a way it is a sequel to Village of the Damned.  Even if you hadn't seen the first movie it wouldn't really matter. This is presented as a stand-alone feature that doesn't acknowledge it's past. I couldn't help but feel that this all felt a bit unnecessary.  Six kids all have telepathic abilities. They can control others, read thoughts, and preempt your every move. Kinda. They are all shuffled off to London by some stuffy British doctors that want to "help" them and study their condition. However, the kids start to revolt. They start making the adults do things, but mostly out of fear. The adults all seem to be afraid of what might happen if they decide to revolt.  The final sequence of the film is the most entertaining. I liked the movie. The acting was the best part.  Col Tom Llewellyn and Dr. Neville are the your two protagonists, blandly played by Ia...

Unhinged (1982) - Don Gronquist

This was another random draw. #15 on the 31 Movies of Halloween brings us Unhinged, a Video Nasty from 1982. Video Nasties were a selection of horror movies that were deemed too graphic and inappropriate. This feature is particularly violent. The story seems interesting enough. I like road trips, I like Video Nasties. It seemed like a pretty nice fit.  Three girls, ready for a big music festival in New Orleans, are unfortunately sidelined after a car accident on the way. The girls are taken to a strange mansion in the middle of nowhere, where a weird family offers "shelter". The girls begin dying one by one. They are brutally murdered. They try to survive while a mystery begins to unfold.  This movie definitely has a creepy vibe. The weirdo synth soundtrack. The masturbating voyeur. This is essentially an updated Old Dark House  setting. The people staying as guests have to survive the night as an unk...

Army of Darkness (1992) - Sam Raimi

Army of Darkness is hard for me to review. I really love it, but I fail to see the horror in it at all. Bruce Campbell is amazing. That's a given. The comedy is great. It's quotable, ti's memorable, it's funny, it's the second sequel to the Evil Dead! The first in the franchise was such a heavyweight. It carried a different tone obviously. It was, and still is scary. The second played around in the comedy element, but I always took it as a product of madness. However, this third installment is completely in the comedy element. It has shades of horror and gore, but it's a comedy. That's not a knock on this film at all, again I love Army of Darkness. It's just not on the same terror level as the other two.  Directly, or indirectly (depending on how you look at it), following the events of the second film, Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn.  Ash has been sucked back in time, along with his car, chainsaw, and boom-stick. They land in medieval times. ...

Sleepy Hollow (1999) - Tim Burton

Tim Burton's take on the old Sleepy Hollow tale is really interesting. He adds his own flair of course. He delves very deeply into the original story by Washington Irving. The casting is usual for Burton. Johnny Depp of course in your lead. Helena Bonham Carter, thrown in for some flavor. The score is done by Danny Elfman. It's literally just the Ichabod Crane story run through the Tim Burton machine. But in a good way. Sleepy Hollow has a problem with a guy, running around, taking people's heads. Like, a lot of people. The town sends word for assistance and the nervous  Constable Ichabod Crane reports. He starts to unravel clues that take him down an incredibly strange path. With the Horseman still murdering patrons, Crane tries finding who's next before they lose their head.  I've always been a big fan of the Disney cartoon,  The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad . This movie is a far cry from Bing Crosby and quaint animations....

The Boogens (1981) - James L. Conway

Another movie chosen completely at random. Sounds like a really stupid title and surprises with its quality. It's hokey. Oh yeah it's hokey. But that just adds to the experience.  A quiet mining town in Colorado appears to be hiding something. When An old mine is disturbed allowing an ancient turtle thing to awaken, and it's hungry. It starts eating its way through the usual cast of characters. Our main heroes are two dorks just cruising for some scootch. They meet up with two girls and there you have your recipe for a survival monster movie.  It's not a terrible movie. Not completely. It has some moments of crap but overall ends up being just another mediocre horror flick with some decent blood and a few scarce creatures. That's the main issue here. The movie does a good job with establishing the young group. But that's really it. The movie doesn't really show you much, not until your three quarters of the way through.  This ...
