The Terror Within (1989) - Thierry Notz

This has been on my IMDB queue for a year or two now and I had finally gotten around to watching it. George Kennedy had recently passed away and I wanted to watch something relevant to the genre that starred him. Unfortunately the first film that I pulled up was The Terror Within. A low-budget sci-fi/horror flop produced by the Rat-King himself, Roger Corman .  In a post-apocalyptic  world, a small group of human scientists are surviving in an  underground complex. Meanwhile the surface of the planet is plagued by monsters called The Gargoyles . The inhabitants of this underground bunker have lost  radio contact with another group of survivors not far from where they are. Two members go out to see if the other group is okay. They aren't . Everyone outside of the bunker is dead , except for one girl named Karen . And she's having a baby ! A half Gargoyle half Human baby to be exact. One that gets loose and starts terrorizing this un...

The Forest (2016) - Jason Zada

For some reason I had a real strong desire to see this movie. It just seemed like it would be something interesting and entertaining. However, I couldn't figure out why. The promotion and presentation isn't that amazing. In fact it looks cheap. But something just peaks my interest. Perhaps it's the whole haunted forest thing.  The film is about Sara, a girl that travels to Japan to save her identical twin sister Jess. Jess apparently had some issues and wandered into the famous  Aokigahara forest. Otherwise known as The Suicide Forest. Sara knows that Jess is still alive. She just seems to know it. She meets Aiden, an American that is living in Tokyo. He is actually going into the forest to write about it. Aiden says he is pretty familiar but still doesn't go without a guide. Sara manages to tag along and they all trek into the haunted forest together. It doesn't take long for things to degrade. The terror starts almost instantly as they enter the forest. W...

Friday the 13th: Part II (1981) - Steve Miner

1981 was really full of great horror movies. The Evil Dead, An American Werewolf in London, The Howling, Halloween 2  and Friday the 13th: Part 2. Director   Steve Miner takes the opportunity with this feature to tell the continuation of the lore that we had from the first film. He expands upon it in pretty great detail. This isn't just another F13 movie. This is the episode that introduces Jason Voorhees as the series antagonist that we all fear.  A new person comes in to bankroll the reopening of Camp Crystal Lake after the events of the first film, Friday the 13th . We get a great deal of backstory and a quick recap of the events leading up to this point, including the decapitation of Mrs. Voorhees. New young adults means new blood and this time the old lady isn't doing the killing. Jason is awake and he wants to kill.  Apparently this film franchise was going to be like that of Halloween and they had meant for this to be an Anthology series. However,...

The Prowler (1981) - Joseph Zito

A horror movie with a World War II theme isn't something that you see all that often. That's part of what makes this movie unique. It belongs to that certain breed of film like Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer or Lustig's  Maniac.  Joseph Zito, the Director, would go on to direct some schlock work as well as Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter. And this would fall into obscurity along with thousands of other horror movies released during the Golden Age of Horror, the nineteen eighties.  In 1945, on the night of the Graduation Ball in Avalon Bay, a young couple was brutally murdered with a pitchfork. The killer was never found. Thirty-five years later, the town is having their first Graduation Ball since the killings. It's being orchestrated by our heroine, Pam MacDonald and her friends. Things go bad when it starts to look like that same killer from thirty-five years prior, starts killing again. And he kills with extreme prejudice.  With a ho...

We Are Still Here (2015) - Ted Geoghegan

We Are Still Here reminded me of so many horror movies but does a good job of staying true to it's own. I had seen the film referenced on Reddit and Rotten Tomatoes, so I thought I would give it a try. I think I had assumed that it was a House of the Devil remake or something due to the cover. So the producers need to do something about that.  A couple that had recently lost their son, who was away at college. Has relocated to a small remote town with a really creepy secret. They moved into a large home there with a force in it that is just evil. The domicile is home to some really scary charred walking corpses too. Remember the Old Dark House motif? Well it's on full display here, just insert the entire creepy small town, some possession, some ghosts and some overall crazy shit.  Wow this movie has some really nuts effects! Barbara Crampton was awesome, as she most always is. And it looks pretty good too. It is really vivid and brutal. If you're a fan of in...

Horror Island (1941) - George Waggner

I chose this movie at random and was surprised that it was a Universal feature. This movie has really weird vibes around it. Upon first impression, it's a really good quality and well made picture. However, it starts to take weird and bizarre turns. It's a sea faring horror flick with pirate overtones that's produced by Universal Pictures. What could go wrong? A broke sailor, Bill Martin, is convinced at trying his luck at obtaining a couple of million dollars in buried treasure. A strange sailor,  Leo Carrillo,   has a piece of a map that leads to that treasure and it just happens to be located on an island that the sailor's family owns. The sailor gathers a small group and they all travel to the island to stay the night at an old dark castle, with the intention of searching for the treasure. Only, they won't be searching for it. They will try to survive as a strange cloaked Phantom seeks to get them to leave one by one.  The music in the fil...

Burying the Ex (2014) - Joe Dante

Horror Comedy has become so complacent. The jokes and atmosphere is stale, it's tough to pull off in a good way. This is one of those complacent movies. It has a good amount of star power, but the writing falls flat. The gore and practical effects are the saving grace. Veteran Joe Dante knows his stuff and happens to be the one person that is trying. It's just lame.  Max (Anton Yelchin) is in a crappy relationship with a controlling and manipulative girl, Evelyn. Fate smiles upon our young friend Max and kills off the girlfriend by having her struck by a bus. After a bit of grieving, Max has the freedom to start seeing a new girl, Olivia. Things get complicated when Evelyn comes back from the dead as a brain craving zombie. Evelyn seeks to rekindle her relationship with Max while physically deteriorating in front of him. And Max is trying to move on, keeping his dead ex-girlfriend a secret from Olivia for now.  This one is brought to us from horror movie legend, ...
